Most commercial auto insurance policies renew annually and your insurer will send you a notification a few weeks before your policy expires. The notice will outline your updated premiums, current coverage, deductibles and any changes that occur to your policy.

Your policy renewal date is a good reminder to review your coverage to ensure you have the right insurance for your business’s needs (and your budget).

  • The renewal process typically begins 30 to 45 days before your current coverage’s end date.
  • Compare quotes from multiple commercial auto insurers at least once a year.
  • Adjust your coverage based on your business’s changing needs and vehicles.

How do I renew my commercial auto insurance policy?

In most cases, you’ll receive a renewal notice from your current insurer about 30 days before the policy’s end date. The notice contains information about any changes that may be occurring to your coverage (for example, if your insurer is discontinuing certain coverage add-ons), your updated premiums and your policy’s coverage limits and deductibles.

Before accepting the changes and renewing the policy, follow these steps:

  1. Consider your business’s needs: If your business has changed since you purchased your policy — for example, if your business has grown or now offers additional services — you may need a policy with higher liability coverage limits.
  2. Update vehicle and driver information: If you’ve hired new employees or purchased new vehicles, you may need to update your policy to adequately cover all of your drivers and cars.
  3. Adjust coverage: Besides changes to liability coverage, you may need to purchase additional insurance. You may need collision insurance, comprehensive coverage, rental reimbursement or expanded towing coverage.
  4. Compare quotes: It’s a good idea to compare quotes from several commercial auto insurance companies at least once a year.

Starting early gives you more time to resolve any underwriting questions, compare offers and evaluate your business’s needs.

When should I start the renewal process?

In general, it’s a good idea to start the commercial auto renewal process several weeks before the current policy ends.

“Many insurance professionals recommend commercial auto customers shop their policy annually at least 45 days before their policy renews,” said Mark Friedlander, senior director of media relations with the Insurance Information Institute (III). Get at least three quotes to compare costs of coverage.”

However, the ideal amount of time you need depends on your business’s size.

Single-vehicle business

If you insure a single vehicle with no recent claims, starting the renewal process 30 to 45 days before the policy’s end date is likely sufficient. This gives you time to:

  • Review your renewal offer
  • Update driver or vehicle information
  • Obtain multiple quotes
  • Complete renewal paperwork

Growing businesses or fleets

If your business is rapidly expanding or you have several vehicles, you may need more time, so plan to start 60 to 90 days ahead of your policy’s end date. This gives you time for the following:

  • Gather U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) or Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) documentation
  • Update vehicle and driver information
  • Review motor vehicle records (MVRs)
  • Update fleet schedules
  • Conduct loss runs (reports of a business’s past insurance claims)
  • Request quotes from multiple insurers

Complex commercial insurance accounts often require you to work with an agent and may need additional underwriting review before you can purchase coverage.

Is it cheaper to renew a commercial auto insurance policy or switch to a new insurer?

Whether it’s cheaper to renew a policy or switch to a new insurer depends on your location, business type and current coverages.

“Switching carriers is typically better if you are facing a large rate increase (which is very common with commercial auto), poor customer service or if your current carrier is altering policy terms,” Friedlander said. “Renewing is beneficial if you have an open claim, received a recent ticket or get discounts by bundling.  Many commercial auto carriers also offer a loyalty discount.”

Because rates can vary so much, it’s important to shop around and compare quotes from several companies.

You may want to renew your existing policy if:

  • Your premiums went up a modest amount
  • You’re satisfied with your insurance agent and insurer’s customer service
  • Any claims were handled efficiently
  • Your coverage matches your business’s needs

You may want to switch insurers if:

  • Your premiums skyrocketed
  • Your business’s needs have changed
  • You need additional types of insurance
  • You’ve experienced poor customer support and claims handling

Commercial auto renewal FAQs

Can I renew commercial auto insurance before my policy expires?

Yes, in fact, the earlier you start, the better. For businesses with larger fleets of vehicles, starting early — such as 90 days before your policy’s end date — gives you more time to shop around and go through the underwriting process.

Will my premium for commercial auto coverage always increase at renewal?

Not necessarily. Premiums may change due to your claims history, vehicle type and age, drivers and location.

Can I switch insurers at renewal?

Yes, your renewal date is a good reminder to shop around and compare quotes. You may find that you can save a significant amount of money by switching insurers.
