On a Michigan automobile insurance policy what do the abbreviations MCCA, MAIPF, MATPA mean?

  • MCCA = Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association
The MCCA is a mandatory state assessment that is determined by a group of private insurance leaders. If you are catastrophically injured in a car crash, the MCCA will pay every medical expense your regular insurance does not cover.
  • MAIPF = Michigan Auto Insurance Placement Facility
Michigan law guarantees the availability of car insurance to all Michigan citizens through the Michigan Auto Insurance Placement Facility (MAIPF).If your car is registered in the state and you have a valid Michigan driver's license, you can get insurance for your car- regardless of your record. If an insurer says you are ineligible for coverage, ask him to submit your application to the MAIPF. Rates may be higher than in the voluntary market, but if you maintain a good payment history and driving record, you will eventually be able to move toward a more traditional Michigan insurance policy.
  • MATPA = Michigan Automobile Theft Prevention Act
Prior to 1986, Michigan was the number one state for autotheft. In response to this problem, the Legislature enacted the Michigan Automobile Theft Prevention Act (MATPA). This act sets up the Automobile Theft Prevention Authority which is funded by a $1.00 fee added to all passenger vehicle insurance. The Authority sponsors various task forces around the state and encourages awareness of the problems of auto theft. Since 1987, auto theft has gone down 16% in Michigan, while the national average has gone up over 50%.
Michigan's legislation hasbecome a model for auto theft reform across the country. Since the enactment of the MATPA, Michigan has gone from the number one state in auto theft to the eleventh state.
